Game over the Border

Will migrants from Bosnia's refugee camps reach the EU?

The small Bosnian town of Bihac is struggling with its own migrant crisis. Thousands of refugees from all over the Middle East make their way to Bihac to join what they call, ‘the game’, an arduous trek across the border with Croatia, an EU member.

Migrants cross the border between Bosnia and Croatia
Migrants determined to make it to the EU set out on a dangerous hike over the border. Even though they are most likely to be deported, migrants remain undeterred and make several attempts.

Most fail and return to Bosnia before they can attempt another crossing. But as migrants wait for their turn in ‘the game’, some residents are becoming increasingly wary of foreigners in the neighbourhood.

Bihac residents grow wary of migrants
Many in Bihac know firsthand what it’s like to be a refugee after the 1992-1995 Balkan war. However, with ever more migrants arriving in the town, local sympathy often gives way to frustration.
