Aftershock: The Türkiye Earthquake

Earthquake victims start life from scratch

More than 45,000 people died and 300,000 lost their homes after a powerful earthquake hit Türkiye in February. Thousands of buildings were destroyed while some cities entirely collapsed. Turkish rescuers along with locals and volunteers from 88 countries worked round the clock to help those who had been trapped under the rubble. Still, their efforts were not enough to rescue all the victims. Galib, a local resident, was at home when his house began to crumble. The man miraculously escaped but his wife was not so fortunate. For a couple of hours Galib tried to pull her out from the rubble with his own hands. However, she died as did many of those who were never rescued. Why did the quake turn out to be so deadly?
