Penguins, scientists and Vostok base, a taste of Antarctica’s magic

Almost two kilometres of ice covers Antarctica, the coldest and emptiest continent on Earth. Humans and wildlife can cohabit in a peaceful, international brotherhood because the 1959 Antarctic Treaty protects the region from mineral exploitation and militarisation, and preserves it for science. RTD joins scientists on a dangerous trek to Vostok base at the magnetic South Pole and finds out what draws some of them again and again to isolation in Antarctica for months on end.
