Surviving the siege

The Soviet Union recognized Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg, as a "Hero City" for the role its citizens played in World War Two defending the city against Nazi invaders. This title was well-earned; as German and Finnish troops nearly encircled the city for 900 days, its residents supplemented their meagre bread rations with anything they could find ,and food became literally worth its weight in gold. RT interviews some of the brave souls that persevered; they share their stories about how the city survived and was even able to manufacture weaponry, engage in scientific research, and produce world-class classical music.
