An urgent meeting is called by the Polar Star’s senior engineer when a $400,000 piece of equipment provided by the German contractors is found to be defective. A scandal erupts when the foreigners refuse to accept responsibility. Changing it could take up to 36 hours, causing another $750,000 to be lost. Heavy rain floods the decks and soaks crew members to the skin as they assemble the replacement and lower it to a depth of 1,842 metres. But will the new part be able to withstand the pressure test?
