Calcio Storico — the violent predecessor of football still popular in Italy
Every year in Florence, matches of the unusual sport of Calcio Storico are held. The essence of the game is similar to football. It’s an ancestor, as the object is to get a ball into the opponent’s goal. The main differences are the use of boxing and rugby tactics, and there are 27 players on each team. This sport is brutal and still has limitations; for example, you cannot beat your opponent over the head.
