Currently Julian Assange is looking at a sentence of 175 years for violating the American Espionage Act on 18 counts. The case refers to the classified “Collateral Murder” material from Iraq and US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks in 2010.
The Department of Justice goes to great lengths to prove Assange is a spy who gave away secret documents threatening national security and all the American people. Fellow journalists, on the other hand, argue this was nothing but a justifiable disclosure of injustice to the public. Should there have been any victims caused by WikiLeaks activity, they would inevitably have been revealed, interviewed and made known.
In his 8 years of confinement, Julian's public support has fluctuated, affected by the Swedish sexual assault charges (which were dropped in late 2019), and Assange’s arbitrary and eccentric behavior inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
Many media experts agree that sentencing Assange will make any journalist or reporter vulnerable over any material they might try to reveal.
