For centuries China has survived as a trading nation. It inspired the longest land-trading route known as the Silk Road. Over the years the Silk Road has developed a romantic mystique. Nowadays, modern China is reinvigorating the classic route and bringing it up to date. Centred on Beijing, the new Silk Road uses land, sea and air to create trade links across Asia to Europe and Africa. The fast-paced initiative intends to allow China to maintain its unprecedented growth in the 21st century.
