Cuban Festival Turned Funeral
16 June
For decades people have been celebrating the festival of Panchencho in Cuba. The festival centres on a mock funeral, where the ‘dead’ person is brought back to life with Cuban rum. A man is placed in a coffin and taken to the graveyard in a procession with music and dance. There is even a ‘grieving widow’. Once the coffin is placed in the ground, the ‘miracle’ of Cuban rum brings the deceased back to life for another year.
