Traveller Troubles: France’s gypsy say their lifestyle is under threat
9 May
The traditional nomadic way of life of France’s gypsy population is under threat. There are an estimated 400,000 travellers in France living in trailers moving around the country. The government has introduced laws which impose huge fines on gypsies who assemble with more than two trailers. Gypsies see the move as trying to end their way of life. The authorities say it is there to reduce the instances of trespass, and friction with residents.
