By land and water explored in RTD’s Northern Dvina River documentaries

The Northern Dvina flows through the city of Arkhangelsk into the White Sea. The mouth of the river is dotted with islands. The small communities who live there rely on regular ferries as a lifeline to the city. Surprisingly in charge of one is a tiny woman, Aleksandra Khokhlova. She’s earned her captain’s stripes even though some of her male colleagues brushed her aside when she joined the flotilla. Alexandra has learnt how the river can be deceptive, as the autumn fog descends making travelling across the water dangerous, as she explains in the documentary Miss Captain.
