The cadets are struggling through a difficult class developing field firing exercises on maps, when their instructor mentions there has been talk of allowing women to join the army’s enlisted ranks. This sparks a fierce and surprising debate over whether and how women should be allowed to serve in the military. Later, in another class, the instructor warns the female cadets that, after graduating, lieutenants’ epaulets will give them formal authority, but real authority must be earned.
