The song of Siberia in RTD’s throat singing documentaries
The ancient cultures of Siberia have a long tradition of singing, but not in the usual way. Throat singing produces guttural sounds that can be heard far away. At one time the songs were used to communicate, and now they can tell a story of life in the past, and how the land used to be. The Tuva Region has seen a revival in throat singing - so much so, it’s become a Mecca for people from around the world wanting to study the art, and learn how to create the complex sounds. Throat singing is still practiced by the traditional ‘medicine men’ or shamans who live in that part of the world.
