Shanghai is one of the most rapidly ageing cities in China. One in six Chinese residents is senior, so a need for special care grows. Previously relatives helped seniors, but Chinese traditions have changed. Family members often live in different regions, so the elderly have nobody to rely on. That’s why special micro centres like Le Ling Home or ‘Happy Home’ appear. They provide professional care services in the house, helping the elderly communicate and live everyday lives.
In China, those who help the community are treated with respect by the locals. Moreover, according to Chinese traditions, volunteers or professionals who maintain harmony in society should be praised. So how does the modern Chinese industry of help function?
