Moldovans torn between Russia and the West
Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. A third of the country’s population live and work abroad. In 30 years, Moldova has had six leaders and has been caught between Russia and the West. While Chisinau has been granted EU candidate status and enjoyed financial support from the US, living standards for ordinary people keep plummeting amid record high inflation. ‘Decisions for Moldova aren’t made in Moldova,’ says former president of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin.
The documentary explores the current situation in Moldova and talks to Moldovans moving to Russia. Former presidents Igor Dodon and Vladimir Voronin, as well as supporters of the unification of Moldova and Romania, share their views on their country’s future.
