The trouble with American drug policy

There are millions of people in prisons worldwide, but one in four inmates is in America. Almost half of American criminal cases are drug-related. The tougher drug policy is associated with Richard Nixon and his declared “war on drugs”. The system developed under Ronald Reagan punishes dealers and users too. However, this problem in the United States is not going away and has gotten worse over time.
