Brighton Beach. Back To UssR

A time capsule of the Soviet dream

The Brighton Beach neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York, was shaped and moulded by Soviet immigrants. The first trickle arrived at the end of the ’70s. Forty years later, the place hasn’t changed much. Often referred to as ‘Little Odessa’, Brighton Beach remains a predominantly Russian-speaking enclave, as many locals speak very little English if any. The short film Russian Peninsula features some of Brighton’s colourful characters – a radio host, a TV presenter, a soccer coach and a fortune-teller – sharing their life stories.
