Congo: Surviving the Resource Curse
The Congolese translator Bernard Kalume Buleri who broke our hearts shares good news and new challenges
Congo My Precious is one of RTD’s most-viewed documentaries. In 2017, filmmaker Anastasia Trofimova went deep into The Democratic Republic of Congo’s remote mining areas. There, she saw how the people who mine the essential coltan, used in mobile phones, provide the resources for but reap no benefits from the high tech industrial revolution.
Then her translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, shared his own heartbreakingly cruel tale of getting caught up in neighbouring Rwanda’s genocide. Now Anastasia Trofimova looks back on the story that moved audiences around the world and asks Bernard how his life has changed since the film came out.
