‘Migration is necessary’ – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

Migration has become an issue at the top of the political agenda in countries across the globe. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres shares his thoughts on the problem and what should be done to solve it.

“I recognise countries have the right to define their own migration policies,” Guterres said when asked about the controversial US ‘zero tolerance’ policy. “But what is important that they do it in respect to human rights, to human dignity, because migrants are also human beings who need to be considered and respected.”

“Migration is necessary,” Guterres stressed. However, poor migration management creates “chaotic situations,” which lead to “populist parties, xenophobic movements and others gaining ground in many countries.”

“What is needed is to recognise that need [of migration] and then organise it to avoid illegal migration, to create opportunities for legal migration,” the Secretary-General said.
