Fishing Wars

Fierce competition, tightening laws and piracy in the rich fishing grounds off Western Africa

Some of the Atlantic’s richest fishing grounds can be found near the coastlines of Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal and hundreds of international companies constantly fight over the right to fish these waters. Russian vessels, too, have fished here since the 1970s, but today their job is harder than ever. They face new laws pushing them further from the coastline and forcing them to hire local crew they struggle to find a common language with. With fish numbers dropping, fierce competition, increasing illegal activity and local African governments resorting to highly questionable means of fishing control, ocean fishing in the 21st century has never been riskier.
