Return to Egypt

A translator of the Egypt-Israeli war revisits the scene 50 years later

Viktor Yakushev was just 14 years old when he first tuned in to Sawt al-Arab radio. His fascination with the Arabic language sparked a lifelong adventure. After graduating from the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow, at the age of 22, Viktor made his first journey to Egypt. Assigned to the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff, responsible for battle planning, he joined other Soviet specialists and advisers in the task of protecting Egyptian skies from Israeli air raids in the 1970s. In the documentary, Viktor revisits Egypt after fifty years. From the bustling streets of Cairo to the majestic pyramids of Giza, he reflects on how life in the country has changed and what remains the same.
