See Me, Hear Me
Autistic nephew committed to psych ward by ‘kind’ aunt tries to get back 3-room flat she sold off
There’s a lot of misunderstanding regarding autism. The condition is not an illness like a virus that spreads from one person to another. Genetics researchers are only now discovering what may be the underlying causes. The condition affects about one in six people in some way. For some it can be debilitating, meaning they have difficulties with communication and socializing. Most people on the autism spectrum don’t even realize they have the condition.
RTD examines how people with autism are treated in Russia. Andrey is 31 years old and has been forced to live in a care home because his aunt was after his flat in the centre of Moscow. Teenager Timur is a talented artist diagnosed with autism and is also likely to end up in a care home.
