Former residents weigh up returning to nuclear ghost town

The earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 caused a nuclear accident at Fukushima power station. The surrounding area was contaminated and 164,000 people were evacuated. Eight years later, the authorities have declared that parts of Okuma, the closest town to the nuclear power plant, are safe for habitation.

For Okuma residents displaced by the 2011 nuclear disaster at Fukushima, return visits are often bittersweet. Many question whether moving back is the right decision.

RTD visits the nuclear ghost town with former residents, as they take a trip down memory lane and consider moving back. Those who have already done so explain their choice, and why it isn’t for everyone.
