Congo's Hell for Girls
Congolese witches against rape
Girls in Congo face harassment and rape daily. Sexual abuse is seen as a norm by society, so there is no safe space on the streets, around contemporaries or even in the family circle. Authorities can’t do much about it, so people turn to alternatives. Young girls are taken to witches and healers, who perform rituals to reduce breast growth. It is common practice to make women look less feminine to lower aggressive attention from men. Though feminist activists in Congo see the real solution in introducing sexual education for boys, sorcery is still the leader. So what does being a girl in Congo feel like?
