Diving for Gold

Risky job in the Philippines Klondike

Pinut-an barangay is known as the Philippines’ underwater Klondike. For years, international corporations have attempted to start mining operations here but were driven away by bad weather and low-profit margins. Ultimately, the area was left to the illegal gold divers. They search for gold nuggets on the bottom — a rather dangerous occupation that can lead to injuries or even death. The residents have no choice — this is the only job they can have to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. What does this life look like?
