Return to Egypt

A translator of the Egypt-Israeli war revisits the scene 50 years later

In the 1970s Viktor Yakushev, a retired Military interpreter and Lieutenant Colonel, was assigned to the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff responsible for battle planning. Fifty years later, fueled by his lifelong passion for Arabic, he embarks on a journey back to Egypt, the country where he spent his youth. Exploring places he missed during his earlier assignments, he rediscovers Egypt, a land that had become like a second home to him. How has the country changed during this time? What remains common between Egyptians and Russians?
