The Afghan Woman King

How a devout Muslim woman found a way to express herself

She carries a gun and a dagger at all times, looks and curses like a man, yet is a faithful Muslim who honours the old ways and traditions. These traditions prescribe women to behave very modestly and cover their faces. Yet Bibi Hokmeena is an exception to the rule. Known among her community as "The Woman King", she wears men's garb and freely convenes with both men and women, both of whom consider her their own. Moreover, as a local MP, she works hard to address social justice and peace. Besides, in the country steeped in four decades of war, Hokmeena's brave life choices are encouraging for both men and women.
