In the 1990s, 1.2 mln people settled in the Gobi desert to alter the land and start a new life. The Chinese state anti-poverty project helped them get a house, education, jobs and access to drinking water. Now the settlers have started businesses and boosted the local economy. Those who settled close to the Pacific Ocean tied their lives to fishing or cultivating oysters. But what mysterious past do the villagers hide?
