Torn From The Tundra

Children of reindeer herders leave the Tundra to start school in the city

Hundreds of Nenets people still follow their ancestors' traditions of driving reindeer herds above the Arctic Circle. In the far North, deer are their only source of livelihood. In search of suitable pasture land, every two days, families have to pack all their belongings and move, in search of a new place to settle. If they don’t do this, their deer will harm the plants they eat, leading to low yield and subsequently putting the whole population at risk of dying of starvation. Thus, one family can cover a distance of 600 km in one year. What is their everyday lives like in the middle of the permafrost Tundra?
