The booming baby factories of India in RTD’s surrogacy documentaries
India has a booming and controversial surrogacy industry as critics fear vulnerable women are open to exploitation. At the Akanksha Infertility Clinic in Gujarat, Dr. Nayna Patel has helped over 500 childless couples become parents while providing surrogate mothers with a life-changing sum of money. Prices are a third of the cost in the United States, and this has led to claims of birth tourism, with surrogates in India becoming no more than a ‘baby factory’. However, the doctors in India who offer the service show surrogate mothers have a better life than many, and infertile couples get the child they’ve always wanted.
