RTD’s Tatarstan documentaries unlock the tastes and temperament of Russia’s Muslim region

With an in-depth investigation into the Hizmet movement set up by Turkish imam Fethullah Gulen, RTD delves into how it tried to penetrate the Muslim community in Tatarstan. Gulenism is a secular technocratic version of Islam, which has been called divisive by Turkish President Erdogan.

The ethnic and religious difference of Tatarstan is evident in the food. Two episodes of the Tastes of Russia series are devoted to cooking Tatarstan style, with such delicious dishes as Azu, and Kystyby flatbread.
