Demining Donbass

Sappers risk their lives clearing Donbass from Ukrainian mines

For several months, Donetsk has been under intense shelling from the Ukrainian armed forces. People are admitted to local hospitals with wounds caused by Ukrainian shells, from various mines and shrapnel.

Amputations are among the most common operations here these days. After a mine wound, it’s virtually impossible to save damaged limbs.

On top of numerous shelling and rocket attacks on Donetsk, the Ukrainian military now uses remote mines in residential areas. The Ukrainian nationalists go as far as planting explosives on playgrounds, even in toys. Very often, even schools and kindergartens become targets.

Hundreds of Russian servicemen are engaged in demining the liberated territories of Donbass.  What does it take to do such dangerous job?
