Forest Under Attack
Dismal results of deforestation
2021 set an abysmal record, with 17 million hectares of forest destroyed in wildfires. But it is only one of the problems that have caused mass deforestation in recent years. Illegal logging, slash-and-burn agriculture, contraband forest exports add to the disturbingly rapid forest extinction. Besides, disrupted ecosystems caused by uncontrolled logging leads to landslides and soil erosion. At the same time, the dry and damaged trees carry pests that can travel long distances and infect healthy areas. While volunteers and WWF reps are struggling against illegal activity, it's not enough to save the remaining woodland. So is there any way to stop the disaster?
