Why the Paris cathedral fire happened at just the right moment
The fire that devastated Notre-Dame Cathedral was an accident, the French authorities immediately announced. Or was it? Paris’s 850-year-old gothic masterpiece is the world’s most-visited monument. It has survived wars and revolutions, but some unidentified spark during building work somehow managed to set alight the “Forest” of 13th-century oak beams that held up its roof, above the stone-arched ceiling.
