How I Escaped From the ‘Islamic State’
Five years on, encouraging news from a Yazidi teen sex slavery survivor
In August 2014, ISIS fighters attacked the Yazidi community in Iraq, forcing whole families to flee, and taking young girls to be sold as sex slaves among themselves. In 2015, RTD filmmaker Anastasia Trofimova met one of these girls at a refugee camp in Turkey. Akhlas, 15, shared her story, and the inner agony caused by the horrific memories still lived with. In 2020, she's living in Germany. Anastasia checks up on Akhlas to find out how she's doing and how much she's been able to free herself from the past.
