A Mother's struggle to support her 38 kids
Mariam Nabatanzi might well be the most fertile mother in Uganda. Aged 39, she has given birth 15 times to an astonishing total of 38 children. As a young girl, she was married off to a much older man, who abandoned the family a few years ago. Now Mariam takes any menial job she can find to buy feed and educate her children.
While Mariam’s story is extraordinary, it reflects the unfortunate reality for thousands of Ugandan girls. The country has one of the world's highest child marriage rates, with 40 per cent of girls under 18 getting married. RTD explores the issue and what the government is doing to eliminate it.
